Interesting Facts about The Chow Chow Mix
If there was ever a dog that fit the nickname “puffy lion dog,” the chow chow mix was it. This breed of dog was first discovered in Mongolia in 4,000 years ago and then introduced to China where the Chinese gave it this nickname.
A puffy lion dog is exactly what the chow looks like with fur that is extra thick around the neck giving it the appearance of having a mane. Their fur can be one of five colors being red, cinnamon, black, blue or cream or any combination of those colors. They have deep set almond shaped eyes. They also have a very curly tail that is made of thick hair that comes up and curls up laying on the back of the chow. An interesting fact is that the chow chow mix is known for having a blue, black or purple tongue. They are the only dog that is known as having this as most dogs have a black or piebald tongue.
If you are unfamiliar with the chow chow mix, they can come off as snobbish when you first meet them, but this is not actually their temperament. It only seems snobbish because it bonds to its master and not to strangers. This is not a dog that will come up to strangers and be friendly to them. They bond to their master and their family, but when they do bond to their family, they bond tightly. They are extremely loyal and affectionate to their families and are so fiercely opposed to strangers that many homeowners’ insurance companies will not cover this breed of dog for what it may do. Males and females are known to co-habitate more peacefully than two or more dogs of the same sex, but with some training, two or more chow chow mix dogs of the same sex can live together.
The chow chow mix does not need a lot of exercise so they are great dogs for apartment life. Their owners do need to take them for a daily walk, but the walk does not need to be lengthy. During the walk, they do take time to explore and play to remain happy and content during the rest of the day. They get bored with endless and repetitive tasks and training them should be done with positive reinforcement. Professional training is recommended as the chow is sensitive to how it is treated.
